Abstract

The loss of function of industrial heritage buildings makes their preservation and adaptive reuse an important issue. This study examines the adaptive reuse of the Trolleybus Power Center in Beyazıt, Istanbul, as a Kütüphane Troleybüs and evaluates the effects of the interventions on the original building. A qualitative research method was adopted. The study included a literature review on the conservation and adaptive reuse of industrial heritage, an examination of plans, photographs, and archival data, and on-site observations of the building. The collected data were evaluated in terms of the preservation of the building’s original architectural, structural, and technical features; the level of intervention; the distinguishability of new and existing elements; compatibility with the existing building; and spatial organization. The findings show that the building’s high-volume interior space, structural system organization, and traces of its technical infrastructure have been largely preserved. Study areas, mezzanine arrangements, and other functional units introduced for library use were designed in relation to the building’s existing spatial characteristics. The visible preservation of technical equipment and infrastructure elements supports the legibility of the building’s industrial character within its new use. The spatial organization of the library function also supports preserving the original spatial character while accommodating different functional requirements. Overall, the study demonstrates that adaptive reuse can preserve the original features of industrial heritage while integrating existing buildings with contemporary use requirements.
